Climate of a Place

Concept Explanation

Climate of a Place

Climate of a place: Climate of a place depends on many factors for example : Distance from equator (latitude), distance from sea, distance from mountains etc.

1.  Distance from equator:  The places which are closer to the equator are much warmer as compared to those who are closer to the poles. This is because sun rays fall directly on the equator and at an angle to the poles.

2. Height above sea level and Distance from sea and mountains: The higher the place, the cooler it is. Hill stations have a cooler climate as compared to plains. Places near the coast, like Goa and Mumbai are neither too hot nor too cold. Whereas places far from the sea have extreme climates with very hot summers and very cold winters.

Five major types of climates are recognised, based on the annual and monthly averages of temperature and percipitation.

  • Moist Tropical Climates are known for their high temperatures and large amount of rain amount the year.
  • Dry Climates are characterised by little rain and a high daily temperature range.
  • In Humid Middle Latitude Climates, Land or water differences paly a key part. These climates have warm , dry summers, and cool, wet winters.
  • Continental Climate is characterised by winter temperature low enogh to support a fixed period of snow cover every year, a relatively moderate precipitation occuring mostly in summer, and an even distribution of precipitation.
  • Polar areas have cold climates as they are covered by ice almost all the year round. Most areas are covered by glaciers or by a semi-permanent layer of ice.
  • Climate has an intense effect on all living organisms. Animals adapt themselves to survive various conditions in which they live.
